The changing definition of "Religion" in our society

As I sat in church today for the first time in a long time, I was reminded of a famous quote: "A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy?"
Its amazing how different cultures in society have developed such abnormal customs and beliefs that contradict common beliefs.
Isn't it peculiar how we see cultures of other religions as "weird" but are completely oblivious of the eccentricities of the cultures we've become accustomed to.
Also people have forgotten the true meaning of Religion. Religion to them is being respectful and listening during church, and following what everyone else does like mindless sheep.
This annoys me because people are forgetting the true meaning and purpose of religion, to become closer to a god.
I don't want to be associated with a religion that sees respecting their holy figure with monetary donations, sacrifices, and various rituals they believe will get them closer to god. Don't get me wrong, everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want, but when your views try to control or even change someone else's, thats when I get a tad annoyed.
In many religions, one of the major beliefs is that they respect people of other beliefs or religions. Have we forgotten about this, or is this stuff that matters such an inconvenience to the various church officials to preach that they'd rather spend all their time making sure 2 people of the same sex can't get married?

And this time it isn't the catholic Church that I'm aiming my rant at, its the people too ignorant to think for themselves that they need a religious figure to tell them what to think and do.
